Posted by: Jordi on Saturday, February 04, 2012 - 11:58 AM
The Internet has become part of our everyday lives, in ways we would never have imagined 30 years ago, but how often do we pause and think about the how and why of getting online? A team of EU-funded Spanish researchers are doing exactly that.

Europe needs to move to IPv6
Posted by: Jordi on Sunday, December 04, 2011 - 12:51 AM
The Internet is doomed until European businesses and organisations begin to move towards IPv6, according to Neelie Kroes, VP of the European Commission responsible for the Digital Agenda.

"We are starting to see very close ahead of us the consequences if we don't make the switch to IPv6," she warned, presumably to a very receptive audience.

Address allocation kicks off IPv4 endgame
Posted by: Jordi on Tuesday, February 01, 2011 - 08:33 AM
The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority has assigned two large blocks of IPv4 addresses to the Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre, activating a rule under which the agency will give out the last of its IPv4 addresses.

The rule states that when only five large blocks of IP addresses remain, one will be handed out to each of the world's five regional Internet registries. With the latest allocation to APNIC, the number of remaining IP address blocks is down to five.

Workshop on skills for IPv6, Ghent, Belgium
Posted by: Jordi on Thursday, November 25, 2010 - 08:22 PM
A workshop on skills for IPv6 will be held on 13 December 2010 in Ghent, Belgium.

Internet protocol version 6 (IPv6) is a version of the internet protocol that is designed to replace the current Internet protocol version 4 (IPv4). The reason for this is that the range of addresses used on the internet is nearly exhausted.

Remaining IPv4 Address Space Drops Below 5%
Posted by: Jordi on Monday, October 18, 2010 - 10:14 AM
The Number Resource Organization (NRO) announced today that less than five percent of the world's IPv4 addresses remain unallocated. APNIC, the Regional Internet Registry for the Asia Pacific region, has been assigned two blocks of IPv4 addresses by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).

This latest allocation means that the IPv4 free pool dipped below 10% in January, just nine months ago. Since then, over 200 million IPv4 addresses have been allocated from IANA to the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs).

EMEA Slow To Adopt IPv6 Thus Hampering Internet Development Reveals New Survey From European Commission
Posted by: Jordi on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 - 03:58 PM
A survey commissioned by the European Commission (EC) and conducted by TNO and GNKS Consult in cooperation with the RIPE NCC, a not-for-profit organisation that supports the infrastructure of the Internet, reveals that organisations in Europe, Middle East and parts of Central Asia have been slow to adopt IPv6, the next-generation of Internet addressing protocol.

This is jeopardising Internet growth and socio-economic development in these regions.

ENISA -1st EU Agency to deliver its web content over IPv6
Posted by: Jordi on Friday, October 16, 2009 - 11:11 PM
The EU Agency ENISA [i.e. the European Network and Information Security Agency] now delivers its web site content over the new Internet protocol IPv6. With this action, ENISA is the first EU Agency to implement the European Commission IPv6 Action Plan.

All computer and electronic devices that connect to the web and other online services uses Internet Protocol Addresses. The current Internet Protocol, IPv4, provides a limited number of such addresses. According to estimates will be exhausted by 2011. The new Internet Protocol, IPv6, allows every citizen and organization to have as many Internet Addresses as they need to connect every conceivable device to the Internet: mobile phones, car navigation systems, home appliances, industrial equipment, etc.

EU Commission promotes IPv6
Posted by: Jordi on Wednesday, May 07, 2008 - 12:35 PM
Twenty-five per cent of all European users should have the opportunity to use IPv6 by the end of 2010, and should be able to access most of their normal services and content with it.

The EU Commission will set this goal in a statement, to be published at the end of May, on the new internet protocol and progress in the net.

Detlef Eckert of the General Directorate for Information Society and Media presented the key points of the statement and a related action plan at the RIPE meeting in Berlin.

The Commission is joining organisations like the Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre (RIPE) in calling for rapid action in the face of dwindling reserves of IP addresses.

The Information Society and Media Directorate General of the European Commission is pleased to invite you to the "European IPv6 Day" that will take place in Brussels, Belgium, on the 30th of May of 2008 at the Robert Schuman room inside the Berlaymont building. The event will see the launch of the Communication "Advancing the Internet action plan for the deployment of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) in Europe".

The main goal of the Communication is to promote IPv6 adoption through a wide range of actions encouraging public administration, users and industrial stakeholders to take decisive steps to accelerate the implementation of IPv6, so as to ensure Europe's readiness to face the expected depletion of the IPv4 addresses. Moreover, the prompt and efficient adoption of IPv6 offers Europe significant opportunities to boost innovation and develop a leading role in advancing the Internet.

Is Google live with IPv6 ?
Posted by: Jordi on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 - 02:52 PM
Of course, this is not official, but you can try ...

It seems to me that Google may be finally testing IPv6 ...

At the time being the AAAA records are not configured for the default home page, but I understand that it is normal that they want to go step by step and avoid any complains from people with missconfigured networks.

The Choice: IPv4 Exhaustion or Transition to IPv6
Posted by: Jordi on Friday, June 15, 2007 - 01:26 AM
The exhaustion of the remaining pool of unallocated IPv4 addresses is approaching within the next few years and this may create some problems for the Internet, unless we make some smart choices. These decisions need to be planned well in advance if we want to ensure that the changes are as trouble-free, painless and inexpensive as possible.

This paper analyze the situation and classifies the potential mitigations for the IPv4 exhaustion problem into two basic categories: Temporary and Permanent mitigations.

A group of researchers led by the University of Tokyo has broken Internet speed records—twice in two days. Operators of the high-speed Internet2 network announced Tuesday that the researchers on Dec. 30 sent data at 7.67 gigabits per second, using standard communications protocols.

The next day, using modified protocols, the team broke the record again by sending data over the same 20,000-mile path at 9.08 Gbps.
